Here's my first report from when I met Tori at the LIVE105 radio studios. -Greg On Thursday morning Tori appeared on the KITS 105.3 Alex Bennet radio show in the San Francisco Bay Area. I woke at 3:30 AM, picked up a friend, and drove up to SF to be in the studio audience. I got to the station at 5:20 and there were already two other people waiting. When the doors opened at 5:50 AM there was a group of about 10 Tori fans waiting to get in. Inside, there are about 14 seats right inside the broadcast room and maybe 8 more in the next room separated by a glass window, but with an open doorway between the rooms. I picked a chair right where I thought the "featured" guests would sit. Well, Tori Amos was supposed to be on at 9AM, but when that time came around Patti Davis (the Reagan's daughter) was still talking about her new book. I'd swear they were trying to torture me personally with the suspense! Okay, Patti leaves and some technicians come in. They ask me to scoot my chair back a little. They carry in a keyboard stand and a Rhodes electric piano and set them up RIGHT in front of me! If I reached out my arm I could touch one end of the piano (of course I had also scooted my chair forward as far as possible :) Five minutes later Tori strolls through the door carrying an Evian water bottle. She sits down, behind the piano and Alex starts talking to her. (Sorry, I don't have a tape so I can't transcribe the interview). Upon learning that Tori played Holiday Inn lounges for 14 years, Alex asks her to "do something" from those days. Tori starts to play "As Time Goes By" in a lounge pianist style and sings "A kiss is just a kiss, please put five dollars in my brandy snifter..." Next Tori talks about being classically trained and how hard it is to make it that way. Then she did "Icicle" from the new album. When she finished I was just in shock and amazed (as was Alex and the rest of the audience), she was just incredible! After the song the program went into a commercial and she signed the cover of my "Cornflake Girl" limited edition CD. She is VERY friendly and when she talks to you she really listens and makes eye contact. She definitely does not have the "star" mentality. After the commercial Alex talks to Tori some more. He describes her voice as "reedy". She says, "Well, as long as its not like a tuba" and then tells the story about how, when she was a child, she used to play piano and sing in class (I'm sure the bootlegs must be out there somewhere! :). One day another kid passed a note and the teacher read it aloud. The note said the kid wished Tori wouldn't sing because she had a voice like a frog. Hmm, wonder what those kids think now? Tori talks about how a voice has to be trained. She also said she listens to a lot of different types of music. She finds that listening to horn players really helps her think about her phrasing. Tori then says, "When I came into the studio somebody out there asked if I would play a certain song, so I'm gonna do it." And then she did "Crucified". I was even more amazed! Even with an electric piano and a small live crowd, she really gets into her music and goes all-out. Such passion! They go into another commercial and she goes around the room signing more autographs and talking to people. Next Alex asked if she would play just one more, so Tori did "Cloud On My Tongue". Wow! I was left speechless! The show was over and Tori went out in the lobby. I took several pictures and got one of myself with her. Then she left. It was just an incredible day (and it was only 10:30AM!) I'm still in a daze!
