This is a very irregular public diary. If you don't know me or my friends, I doubt you will find anything interesting to read on this page.

March 23, 2004

And another year slipped by without much in the way of updates. Even my movie list crapped out mid-year. Well, I have big news at least -- Kimi and I are engaged! I proposed to her on Valentine's Day, on a Hornblower dinner cruise, while we sailed underneath the Golden Gate bridge. Our wedding date will be in April or May of 2005. We are both very happy!
What else happened? Well, there was the Chinese New Year play last month. And a fun snowboarding trip. Kimi and I went to Kauai for a holiday back around Labor day 2003 instead of going to Burning Man -- it was great, and I would love to post our diary and some pictures; we also spent Thanksgiving at Kimi's sister's place in Tacoma, and Christmas Day at my parents' place in Elk Grove. Lots more stuff happened (like Jennie's 40th birthday party and Kyrie's twins being born in July). I wonder if I could keep a blog going? Harry does.

January 21, 2003

Oooph, this page is dusty. Two years between updates seems to be average now. How terrible. What can I say? I've been busy and I haven't made web page maintenance a priority. In fact, you could say with accuracy that I'm burned out on the Web ever since finishing the HTML book. So, here's what's new: I've been going out with Kimi for over 15 months, and she's been living with me since January 1, 2002. One year! Woo hoo! We went to Montreal in November for a last minute weekend vacation. Good times. Still working at TiVo; I was promoted to Director in August of 2002. My parents have moved back to the West coast; my sister is still in India. My brother Rob is still living in Sunnyvale, working for Cypress. My brother Phil is a distinguished scientist (he just won an award). And Harry has graduated from Santa Cruz.

April 23, 2001

Oops, where did those two years go? I can't believe I haven't written more. I should have talked about New Year's 2000 or New Year's 2001, both amazing times; or the trip to Hawaii last March; or my great-while-it-lasted relationship with Donna. Oh well.

So what's new? I just bought a house, in Mountain View, and moved in on Saturday with the help of Rob, Sam, Kyrie, Rich, Dawn, Chris, Ron and Harry. Then Sam S., Patti and Steve W. came over to play poker. That's how organized I was, moving everything ahead of time except the furniture; we were so together that we could party from day one. Yesterday, my birthday, Kyrie and I went shopping for nice things for the house that now, all of a sudden, I can't afford. Rob and Harry gave me some very nice presents for my birthday. I own a tool set! I have a mortgage! Gee, I must be a grown-up. Oh, and Bob, Kyrie and Sabrina took me out to sushi last night. I'm very happy. Buying myself a house was my most extravagant gift yet.

My brother Rob, who has been sleeping on my couch since September, now rents a room from me. We have big plans for the house.

Checkpoint: When I started at TiVo, I was a Senior Program Manager. I was promoted to Manager and then Senior Manager; my team now has ten people. And I just turned 34. I'm not sure what I think about that. I can't stand how much money I just paid to the IRS.

March 10, 1999

I resolve to update this diary at least twice a year, whether it needs it or not. I now work at TiVo. See the Posi-Web for my daily journal.

June 1, 1998

Okay, so what's new? I turned 31 in April, I moved to Mountain View now that mom's more self-sufficient (and she and my dad are moving to Washington, D.C., since my dad now has a job there with the IRS), and I dated a couple of different women for a while. Didn't work out, though. I'm slowly getting un-burned out.

January 27, 1998

Did I mention that I work for Silicon Graphics now? I'm very burned out on Web stuff (after writing and finishing the book), and since I spend 50 hours a week working with computers, I have little energy to play with them as well.

July 28, 1997

Well, I've spent the last three months working like a dog on the book. I haven't been very social. It's been kind of dull for my friends and family, really, but I like the writer's life. And you can't beat the eight footstep commute.

April 22, 1997

Omigod, I'm 30!

I've just signed a contract to co-write a book about HTML for Sybex. Pretty exciting, but a lot of work.

March 18, 1997

I wish I had the time to tell you about all the stuff that's been going on...concerts, work projects, spring cleaning, trips to the ocean and skiing -- but it will all have to wait, I'm afraid. Sorry. But at least the roof doesn't leak anymore. My sleep schedule is totally messed up. I've been working on Web sites, and I taught a class at San Jose State. And my cousin Mark and I joined a gym. Feel the burn, man. Go Bears.

December 7, 1996

For the last few months I've been working on Internet for Busy People, Second Edition, by Christian Crumlish. Life has been somewhat simple: work, take care of mom, take in the occasional movie, Basketball game, writer's meeting or game of Eitris. Went on a couple of dates; finished two or three short stories. Still haven't unpacked all my boxes yet. And the roof leaks.

October 10, 1996

I've now been in Saratoga for about a month. I moved here because my sister Joanna, who was taking care of my mom, has just one year left of school at U.C. San Diego; so we all decided she should finish school and that I should move in. Which I did. So now I'm taking care of mom as she recovers, and I've changed my job status and moved out of my Berkeley apartment.

It's a big change, and I've been very busy with it all. I think I'll have time for the Web again someday soon, but for right now my priorities are my mom, work, settling in, and writing some stories (in that order). I'll try to keep things a little more updated than I have been.

"GOB+Mike night" is movie night. Originally, Taff and Mike and I would meet, first on Mondays and then on Thursdays, to watch movies. Every now and then Jennie would join in, as well as occasional guests like Allison and Ryan and Ken and Naoko and John and Partha. Now that Mike's gone to Prague for a year and points elsewhere for two years after that, GOB Night has become Jennie, Taff and myself. So now Thursdays are "GOB+Jennie night": we take turns hosting and rent movies and eat ice cream and discuss whatever things come up for us after the movie.

Don't ask what "GOB" is (it's the fictional band that Taff and I were in; long involved history; better not to know).

Tonight we rented "Prick Up Your Ears" and we had frozen chimichangas and vanilla caramel ice cream. The movie was a little slow, but very moving (directed by Stephen Frears, about playwright Joe Orton, who was played by Gary Oldman).

Afterwards, I was showing off the web, and Jennie and Taff created quick home pages for themselves (give them credit, we did it in just a few minutes...funny how it got so late at night so quickly).

From now on, most of these news briefs will be part of Posi-Web, a new exciting and dynamic and positive project.

March, 1996

Not much to say about March.

February, 1996

February was just so exciting that I didn't have time to write anything down.

January 4, 1996

Happy damn new year! I was a slug for New Year's Eve: I didn't want to party, and without Jennie organizing a get-together I wasn't enthused. So I just ended up hanging out with my brother Rob and my friend Rich, playing games. I watched the ball fall at midnight, anyway. But... all sorts of excitement in the weeks beforehand. Christmas was great, with the whole family together; Roxanne threw a great Solstice party (an all-nighter) on the Friday before Christmas; I've seen Cal play basketball, both winning and losing; I met Mary West; last night Mike dragged me to see 2001 at the Castro; and I finished a new story (sorry, though, it's not for public consumption).

November 15, 1995

I went to dinner at Joe and Patty's place in the City, mainly so I could play Magic with Joe. [Warning: the rest of this paragraph will be incomprehensible if you don't play Magic: the Gathering.] I kicked his sorry league deck's butt (2-1 in matches, 5-2 in individual games), but he managed to win a couple against my regular deck (a Merieke Ri Berit deck): and, through craven use of Dark Pact, stole my one and only Royal Assassin. Talk about a Howl from Beyond: I'm miffed.

Afterward, stopped by Club Deluxe to have drinks with Partha, John, Scott, Karen and Rita. (I was meeting Rita for the first time and seeing Scott and Karen for the second time. John Restrick is my best friend, and Partha is an old buddy.) We argued about rent control and astrology while very loud blues played.

November 13, 1995

I should have something to say about the last two months; but the truth is I do not. I have been taking a writing class; I've just got over the flu; I've been busy with work and BAMM and my navel. I mean, my novel.

September 22, 1995

There were over 3,000 hits on these pages this week; mostly people who wanted to read the Unabomber's Manifesto that was posted to alt.usenet.manifestoes. I should have tidied up more.

Before September 22, 1995

I saw Hackers Wednesday night with Partha, Sam and John. Man, this is the most eeleete movie ever made. Their only crime was curiousity. And breaking and entering. And assault with some kind of flare gun. And causing a whole bunch of car crashes. And stretching the limits of credibility. But it was awesome! They were such

. I'll see this movie again and again and again. That or visit the movie's hacked web site. (Does every movie have its own web site now?)

My brother Harry paid me back the 35 bucks he borrowed. Most of it. He now owes me a mere $3.00. This should qualify him for a Gold Visa card or something.

I've come out of the cupboard as a kibologist.
